5 out of 5 stars My Daughter Loves It   October 21, 2008
24 out of 24 found this review helpful

My five year old begged for this for her birthday. After reading all the bad reviews of the deluxe set I was reluctant, but it ended up being great. True, the pen is worthless--we just used our fingers (except the sticky retrieval eraser thing), but it's good for developing motor skills. It requires adult help to teach how, but now she can do it herself and loves it. They worked great. I read that they fall apart, so I just told her to handle them gently so they won't break and they have all stayed together.

She loves it and thinks it's super fun. It works perfectly if you just follow these tips:

1. Keep everything dry as you're working with it. Spray it away from the rest of the beads. Make sure your hands are dry.
2. Use A LOT of water to spray them and let them dry for day.
3. Don't expect your child to do it alone right away. Help teach them first.
4. Tell your child to handle them gently after they are dry, they aren't super durable.

4 out of 5 stars Fun but Forget the Pen   August 29, 2008

My kids (and I) enjoy making Pixos, but we don't use the pen. We found it too hard to dispense the beads. Also, we let the creations dry for longer than ten minutes, otherwise they came apart and everyone got frustrated after all the time painstakingly placing the beads by hand. You don't need the expensive machine which is really nothing more than an elaborate way to hold a pen - which doesn't work very well in the first place. It says on the package ages 4 and up, but I can't imagine a four or five year old being able to do this with precision.

3 out of 5 stars That's right...the pen is useless...but the rest is pretty good   November 24, 2008

My kids are 7 and 10 and are currently enjoying Pixos (nee Aquadots). The first thing I learned about this product is that the pen is absolutely useless. I mean, completely useless. The second thing I learned about this product is that it is pretty expensive for what you get. There are not nearly enough pixos dots to keep the kids going with design after design. (And that is what brought me to Amazon to see if I could find a set with just the dots only.) That being said, once you get over the useless pen, this is an art project that my kids can do by themselves...completely...and to me that's worth a lot. They place the templates, place the beads, spray the design and wait for their masterpiece to dry...all by themselves. Yes, unlike the plastic beads that require ironing, this product does not (necessarily) require adult supervision and gives much more instant gratification. I do agree with some of the other reviewers that the time for the project to dry exceeds the stated time in the instructions, but if you've got multiple trays, that shouldn't be a problem if your child wants to move on to another design before one is dry.

To sum it up, this product is actually a hit with the kids, which makes me give it a good review. (They are now creating Christmas ornaments.) What this product needs is waaaaaay more beads, or a set that contains 2 or 3 THOUSAND beads (at a reasonable price) to keep the kids busy for days to come.
